The Jabbawockeez are an American hip-hop dance crew. They are most known for winning MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew season 1, in 2008. They were initially formed by 3 members Kevin Brewer “KB”, Joe Larot “Punkee”, and Phil Tayag “Swagger Boy” as “3 Muskee”. In 2004, they added Chris Gatdula “Cristyle”, Rynan Paguio “Kid Rainen”, Ben Chung “B-Tek”, and Jeff Nguyen “Phi”, to the group. Tony Tran “Transformer” joined the group in 2013.

Three Muskee started performing in Sacramento, California while wearing white masks and gloves. The mask and gloves was inspired by the 1970s San Francisco strutting crew Medea Sirkas. Gary Kendall “Gee One” and Randy Bernal “DJ Wish One” were both members of the dance crew MindTricks from San Francisco Bay Area. Both MindTricks and Three Muskee all associated with each other. Brewer, Larot and Tayag, later moved to the San Diego area. They intended to start a Souther California chapter of MindTricks but later evolved into Jabbawockeez.

The name Jabbawockeez was inspired by the mystical monster from the nonsense poem Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll. The original 7 member group began performing as a group in 2004.

Jabbawockeez then added 4 more members bring the total to 11. In 2004, Jeff Nguyen “Phi” earned a spot in the Jabbawockeez in 2004 by battling Kevin Brewer. B-boys Eddie Gutierrez “Eddiestyles”, Kaba Modern’s Ben Chung “B-Tek” and Saso Jimenez “Saso Fresh” joined the group.

The Jabbawockeez dance style is made up of various urban styles, but primarily popping & b-boying. In 2007, the Jabbawockeez appeared on America’s Got Talent season 2. They performed with 9 members and were eliminated in the Las Vegas callbacks episode.

In 2008, they auditioned for America’s Best Dance Crew season 1 with 7 members because of the show’s crew limit rules. Originally, the group was supposed to consist of Chris Gatdula, Joe Larot, Phil Tayag, Kevin Brewer, Rynan Paguio, Gary Kendell and Phi Nguyen, but Gary died that year, and Joe suffered a knee injury during the auditions. The group seleced Ben Chung to replace Joe and left Gary’s spot vacant. They went on to win 1st place earning them $100,000.
